Als die Frau des Bestseller-Autors Alan Wake im Urlaub verschwindet, schlägt seine Suche die Seiten eines Thrillers auf, von dem er nicht sagen könnte, ob er ihn überhaupt geschrieben hat. Die Anwesenheit von etwas Dunklem verfolgt die Kleinstadt Bright Falls und bringt Wake an den Rand seines Verstands, als er um die Lösung des Mysteriums und die Rettung seiner Liebe kämpft.
